The Opposition Democratic Party (DP) in Uganda has urged the government to strengthen institutions mandated to fight corruption and protect whistleblowers. This call comes as a means to promote accountability, safeguard public resources, and drive national development. According to the party, despite the establishment of several institutions to combat corruption, many remain inadequately facilitated to effectively execute their mandates.
The call by the DP follows recent police operations in Kampala, where 14 suspects were arrested over allegations of siphoning fuel from government and military vehicles. The suspects were arrested during a raid on a garage and washing bay in Kibuli. The DP spokesperson, Okoler Opio Lo Amanu, addressed journalists at the party headquarters in Mengo, highlighting the need for comprehensive investigations into the alleged fuel siphoning racket.
Okoler Opio Lo Amanu commended Minister Balam Barugahare for taking the lead in the fight against corruption and urged other government ministries and agencies to join the efforts. He emphasized the importance of protecting taxpayers’ money and promoting accountability in public service. The DP also insisted that all individuals implicated in the alleged fuel siphoning scheme should be held accountable in accordance with the law.
On a separate political development, Okoler welcomed reports that General Salim Saleh had called for opposition figure Dr Kizza Besigye to be taken to hospital. He also welcomed General Salim Saleh's appeal for dialogue to address political differences. The DP described these interventions as positive steps towards promoting peace, reconciliation, and political understanding in the country.
Okoler maintained that dialogue remains an important avenue for addressing Uganda’s challenges, resolving political disagreements, and fostering national unity. He emphasized the need for the government to prioritize strengthening anti-corruption institutions and protecting whistleblowers to ensure accountability and transparency in public service.
The recent operations in Kampala and the DP's calls for stronger anti-corruption institutions highlight the ongoing challenges of corruption in Uganda. The country has struggled with corruption in various sectors, including government and military institutions. The DP's demands for accountability and transparency reflect the concerns of many Ugandans who are seeking greater action against corruption.
The issue of corruption in Uganda remains a significant challenge to national development and accountability. The DP's call for strengthened anti-corruption institutions and protection for whistleblowers is a crucial step towards promoting a culture of accountability and transparency in public service. As the government responds to these demands, Ugandans will be watching closely to see if meaningful action is taken to address this critical issue.
