Lagos State governorship candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Funso Doherty, has expressed concerns over the state's inability to translate its revenue into essential services for its citizens. According to Doherty, Lagos State generates more taxes and revenues than 31 states combined, as per recently released statistics from the National Bureau of Statistics.

Doherty unveiled his running mate, Tolani Animashaun, and launched his 34-point ‘Onà Tuntun’ manifesto, emphasizing that politics should prioritize the lives of the people over party affiliations and elections. He stated that despite citizens fulfilling their part by paying taxes and other revenues, the government has failed to reciprocate by providing adequate services.

The NDC candidate highlighted the struggles of pregnant women who, despite being promised free healthcare, are still required to purchase medicines, undergo tests, and provide syringes when accessing health facilities. This exemplifies the government's failure to deliver on its promises, Doherty said.

Doherty also raised concerns about the state of public education in Lagos. He noted that over half of the children who began school in state public schools in 2024 did not achieve passing grades. As a result, parents are forced to spend their income sending their children to low-quality private schools due to a lack of faith in public schools.

The plight of teachers in public schools was another issue Doherty addressed. He stated that despite their dedication to serving the state, teachers have not received adequate support, equipment, compensation, or training from the government. Doherty promised to address these issues if elected.

As part of his plan, Doherty aims to create 500,000 jobs within his first four years in office. He also plans to establish about 40 technical and vocational schools across the state to equip citizens with essential skills. These initiatives are part of his broader strategy to transform Lagos State.

Doherty's campaign focuses on accountability and efficient governance. His ‘Onà Tuntun’ manifesto outlines a comprehensive plan to address the state's challenges. If elected, Doherty's administration will prioritize the welfare of Lagos State citizens and work towards providing them with quality services.
