The Regional Sustainable Cleanliness Campaign, themed "Dodoma Our Pride, Cleanliness Our Responsibility," was unveiled by Regional Commissioner Ms Rosemary Senyamule during World Cleanup Day commemorations in Msalato Ward. The initiative aims to keep Dodoma clean and implements directives issued by President Samia Suluhu Hassan. Ms Senyamule emphasized that cleanliness is not a choice but a responsibility for every citizen and institution.
The campaign includes monthly community clean-up exercises on the last Saturday of every month, alongside inspections in residential and business areas without disrupting economic activities. Ms Senyamule warned that individuals, businesses, and institutions found violating sanitation regulations would face legal action, including fines. The goal is to sustain cleanliness responsibilities beyond the one-day exercise.
The City Council has allocated 3bn/- for waste collection and disposal, expanding service providers and engaging 20 community groups in cleanliness activities. Dodoma District Commissioner Mr Jabir Shekimweri highlighted these efforts, emphasizing the importance of community involvement in maintaining cleanliness.
The Head of the Waste Management and Environmental Sanitation Unit, Mr Mkana Mkana, presented the council's report, revealing that inspections covered 2,675 households and 1,582 businesses. This led to the collection of 5.66m/- in penalties from environmental offenders. Traders operating in unauthorized locations are being relocated to designated markets and formal trading areas.
Ms Senyamule also condemned the indiscriminate disposal of plastic bags and packaging materials, calling for stronger collection and recycling systems to protect the city's environment and image. The campaign seeks to address these issues and promote a cleaner, healthier environment for residents.
