Denmark's Ambassador to Egypt, Lars Bo Muller, has underscored Egypt's significance as a strategic partner for both Denmark and the European Union. The partnership encompasses various areas, including trade, investment, green transition, climate action, political dialogue, culture, and communication between the two nations. This was stated during a meeting with journalists at the Danish Embassy, attended by embassy members.
The strategic partnership between Egypt and Denmark has evolved over the years into a broad and growing relationship with a strategic character. High-level visits have added momentum to the relationship, including President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi's visit to Denmark in December 2024. This historic visit saw the launch of a strategic partnership agreement, the establishment of the Egyptian-Danish Business Council, and the signing of several memoranda of understanding focusing on trade, investment, green transition, security, and Egypt's regional role.
Other notable visits include Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen's trip to Egypt in March 2023, her first official visit, where she met with President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly. Discussions centered on green transition, regional security, migration, and the geopolitical implications of the Ukraine war. Additionally, Queen Mary of Denmark visited Cairo to attend the grand opening of the Egyptian Museum, highlighting Denmark's commitment to cultural diplomacy and the solid Danish-Egyptian partnership.
Ambassador Muller mentioned that the two countries are building on these foundations in the coming phase, including interaction through Denmark's Africa strategy, "Africa in Our Time." This strategy enhances the role of the Danish Embassy in Cairo as a regional hub for Denmark's engagement with North Africa. The partnership prioritizes equal partnerships, trade promotion, investment, green transition, and job creation, focusing on vital sectors such as green energy and transition.
Key sectors of focus include sustainable transportation and shipping, healthcare, water, food and agriculture, sustainable infrastructure, and digital transformation. To translate Denmark's Africa strategy into tangible steps and support the implementation of the strategic partnership, the Embassy has expanded its economic diplomacy team with new staff.
The Egyptian-Danish Business Council (EDBC), launched in 2024, plays a crucial role in this regard. The council has grown to include around 30 companies, comprising 17 Danish and 12 Egyptian firms. It serves as a growing platform for enhancing cooperation between the private sector, building partnerships, and creating business and investment opportunities between the two countries.
The strengthened partnership and expanded council reflect the commitment of both nations to fostering a robust and mutually beneficial relationship. As Denmark continues to engage with Egypt and the broader African region, the focus remains on sustainable development, economic growth, and strategic cooperation.
