Delta Air Lines recently celebrated its 20th anniversary of operations in Senegal. The US-based airline commenced its services to Dakar on December 4, 2006, initially as a stop on its route from Atlanta to Johannesburg. Over the past two decades, Delta has transported over 1.1 million passengers on its Senegal route. The airline currently operates three to four weekly flights between Dakar and New York, depending on the season.

The 20th-anniversary celebration was marked with a ceremony in Dakar, attended by representatives from public authorities, aviation sector partners, business leaders, customers, and employees. Ryan Bowman, Delta's senior vice president of international strategy, stated that the milestone represents more than just an operational achievement. He expressed the airline's gratitude to its customers, employees, and partners.

The Dakar-New York route offers passengers connections to over 30 destinations in the US, Canada, and the Americas. Jennifer Paguada, chargé d'affaires at the US Embassy in Senegal, highlighted the significance of the route, saying it goes beyond a geographical connection. She emphasized that the route brings people together, reunites families, and fosters commercial exchanges between the two countries.

The Senegalese authorities view the development of this route as crucial for the country's competitiveness and economic openness. Colonel Cheikh Birahim Thioune, director of cabinet for the minister of land and air transport, noted that air transport contributes to the fluidity of exchanges, mobility of people and skills, and development of investments and economic activities.

In addition to its air transport services, Delta has implemented initiatives to support local communities, particularly in education, entrepreneurship, and professional development. The airline organized the Delta Innovation Camp in 2023, which brought together 69 young people aged 14 to 18 to develop skills in innovation, communication, and problem-solving.

Delta's operations in Senegal are part of its broader African network, which includes services to six cities in five countries. The airline currently operates its Dakar-New York route using Boeing 767-300ER aircraft, offering four classes of travel and amenities such as in-flight entertainment and Wi-Fi connectivity.

Looking ahead, Delta aims to continue its commitment to Senegal and strengthen its connections with local partners. The airline's 20-year presence in the country underscores the importance of airline partnerships in enhancing international connectivity and creating opportunities for tourism, trade, and investment.
