De Beers Group recently participated in Jewellery & Gem WORLD Hong Kong (JGW), a four-day event that took place from 16 to 19 September. The company created an immersive experience centered on Desert diamonds, drawing inspiration from nature and human craftsmanship. This showcase was the first major beacon initiative by De Beers Group in over a decade and its largest category-marketing investment in 15 years. The event aimed to strengthen long-term confidence in the natural diamond category.
The Desert diamonds showcase followed its successful Asian debut in Shanghai in July. De Beers Group's leadership, including CEO Al Cook, attended a breakfast meeting with industry partners to discuss future opportunities and collaboration. Guests included Lekoko S. Kenosi, Ambassador of Botswana to China, and Nosiphiwo Mzamo, Chief Executive Officer of the State Diamond Trader of South Africa. The meeting highlighted the importance of working together to promote natural diamonds.
Al Cook, CEO of De Beers Group, expressed his confidence in the long-term opportunity presented by the Chinese market. He emphasized the importance of industry collaboration to strengthen consumer confidence in the value of natural diamonds. Cook also mentioned that the Desert diamonds campaign had delivered encouraging results in the US market and was showing strong momentum in China.
Paul Rowley, Executive Vice President of Diamond Trading at De Beers Group, discussed the current state of the natural diamond market. He noted that the market was gradually stabilizing, with supply and demand moving towards equilibrium and diamond prices showing signs of recovery. Rowley emphasized the need for effective supply management and investment in detection, grading, and traceability systems.
Lynn Serfaty, Managing Director of Natural Diamonds at De Beers Group, highlighted the emotional and cultural resonance of natural diamonds in China. She explained that Desert diamonds resonated with Chinese philosophies of resilience, transcendence, and harmony between humanity and nature. The showcase aimed to support China's focus on quality consumption and help consumers appreciate the enduring value of natural diamonds.
The Show & Tell experience, unveiled by De Beers Group, took visitors on an immersive journey from earth to adornment. The installation combined visual, tactile, and emotional storytelling, transporting visitors through a desert landscape. The exhibit featured loose natural diamonds presented in warm, earthy hues, recalling the layered tones of the desert landscape.
The exhibition also showcased Desert diamonds jewelry collections from retail partners, including Chow Tai Fook's Desert Rose collection. The event demonstrated the unique characteristics of Desert diamonds, which arise naturally from subtle variations in nitrogen content and plastic deformation. This results in every stone having an entirely individual appearance and personality, appealing to younger consumers seeking authenticity and permanence.
