The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has announced the arrest of a 26-year-old man, Muhiyadin Abdi Sheikh, in connection with the fatal stabbing of a U.S. national in Garissa. According to the DCI, Sheikh is the main suspect in the murder of Osman Aweys Abdi, who was attacked on May 28 near Abubeida School in Bulla Mzuri, about five kilometers north of Iftin Police Station.

The victim, Osman Aweys Abdi, was stabbed in the left thigh and struck on the head with a blunt object by his assailants before being robbed of his mobile phone. A well-wisher managed to obtain the victim's phone number and alerted his brother, who rushed him to Antalya Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. The body was later moved to Garissa County Teaching and Referral Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

Following the suspect's escape, DCI detectives launched an intelligence-led operation that led to his tracing to a hideout in Kabete, Nairobi. Sheikh was apprehended and taken to Kasarani Police Station, where he is currently being held in custody pending an escort to Garissa, where authorities intend to file murder charges against him.

The arrest of Muhiyadin Abdi Sheikh is a significant breakthrough in the case, and it is expected to bring some closure to the family of the victim. The DCI has been working closely with other security agencies to ensure that justice is served in this case. The incident has raised concerns about security in Garissa County, where violent crime has been on the rise in recent years.

Garissa County has been identified as a hotspot for organized youth gangs, which are known to recruit teenagers and use machetes and knives in robberies, extortion, and other violent offenses. Groups such as Squad Chafu and the Gaza Family have been linked to several violent incidents in the region, prompting periodic crackdowns by security officials.

The National Crime Research Center has highlighted the need for increased security measures in Garissa County to address the growing threat of organized youth gangs. The center's report noted that these gangs often use violence to intimidate and extort money from residents, and that they pose a significant threat to public safety in the region.

The DCI has assured the public that it will continue to work tirelessly to bring perpetrators of violent crimes to justice. The arrest of Muhiyadin Abdi Sheikh is a testament to the agency's commitment to ensuring that those who commit crimes face the consequences of their actions.
