The West African Examinations Council, WAEC, has appointed Dr. Amos Josiah Dangut as its new Registrar and Chief Executive Officer. Dangut assumed office on October 1, succeeding Alhaji Pateh Bah of The Gambia. He will serve a five-year term ending in September 2031. His appointment was ratified by WAEC's international governing body at its 74th Annual Meeting in Accra, Ghana, in March 2026.
Dangut previously headed WAEC's Nigeria National Office from October 2023 to September 2026. During his tenure, he oversaw the introduction of several technology-driven initiatives, including Computer-Based WASSCE, the Digital Electronic Marking System, and the Digital Certificate Portal. He also played a role in the deployment of WAEC's E-Study Platform, Digital Records Archive, and digital systems for examination logistics and monitoring.
A Nigerian, Dangut holds degrees in Animal Production, Animal Science, and Education Administration and Planning. He began his education career in 1994 at St Louis College, Jos, where he worked as a WAEC examiner before joining the Council in 1998. He subsequently held several positions within WAEC, including Assistant Registrar in the Test Development Division, Branch Controller, Controller of the Post-Examinations Department, Zonal Coordinator, and Deputy Registrar and Head of the National Office.
Announcing the appointment, the Head of Public Affairs, WAEC Headquarters, Accra, Demianus G. Ojijeogu, said the new Registrar brings more than two decades of experience in examination development and administration. Dangut has served on the boards of institutions, including the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council, Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board, and Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board.
Dangut is a Fellow of the Science Teachers Association of Nigeria and a member of the Nigeria Institute of Management. He also serves as the Regional Representative of the West African sub-region on the Executive Board of the Association for Educational Assessment in Africa. His extensive experience and achievements make him a suitable candidate for the position of WAEC Registrar.
