The Cross River State Police Command has arrested a murder suspect in connection with the killing of a 42-year-old man at Kekoti, Ajere in Yakurr Local Government Area. According to the police, the incident occurred on September 27, 2026, at about 1:00 am, following a misunderstanding over N500 given as a gift to both men. The victim, Ayei Ekpe Ibor, was allegedly stabbed during an altercation with Ebino Mbang Ikpi.
The police reported that the dispute degenerated into a fight, resulting in Ibor's death. The suspect fled the scene, prompting police operatives to commence a search for him and recover the deceased for medical certification. At about 8:40 am on the same day, operatives tracked and arrested Ebino Mbang Ikpi at his hideout in the Ajere-Ekori area. He was taken to Yakurr Division for detention and further investigation.
Following the arrest, tension escalated as sympathizers and other persons mobilized and attacked the Ekori Police Division, demanding the release of the suspect. The group allegedly resorted to hurling stones at the facility, damaging seven windows, the DPO/DCO office door, six plastic chairs, a wall mirror, part of the roofing, and the passenger-side glass of the DPO's official vehicle.
The mob also attacked the residence of the Ajere Youth Leader, Omini Jacob, on the allegation that he assisted the police. Police operatives responded promptly, dispersing the crowd and restoring normalcy. The situation has since been brought under control, with the station reinforced by ACPOL Ugep and the VCRU, Ugep.
The Commissioner of Police, Cross River State Command, CP Ajo Geoffrey Ordue, has directed that the murder suspect be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation and prosecution. He has also ordered intensified efforts to identify and arrest all persons involved in the attack and destruction of police and private property.
The Command urged members of the public to remain calm and law-abiding, warning that while it will continue to protect the rights of all persons, attacks on police formations, destruction of property, and attempts to obstruct criminal investigations will be dealt with in accordance with the law. The police said further developments will be communicated as the investigation progresses.
