Crocworld Adventure and Conservation Centre is set to host a conservation talk and breakfast on October 31, focusing on sea turtle research. The event, part of Crocworld's ongoing Conservation Talk programme, will feature PhD researcher Natalie Dos Santos sharing her first-hand experience of sea turtle research. The talk will provide insights into the latest research conducted along the KwaZulu-Natal coast, including underwater footage of researchers catching, tagging, and tracking turtles.
The conservation talk aims to connect visitors with the biodiversity found around Crocworld and along the coastline. According to Susan Badat, manager of Crocworld Adventure and Conservation Centre, the event will offer an informative and engaging experience. The centre has been growing its Conservation Talk programme with topics that highlight the importance of conservation efforts.
Natalie Dos Santos, a PhD student at Nelson Mandela University, has spent eight years working with sea turtles. Her experience began on the nesting beaches of iSimangaliso Wetland Park in northern Zululand and later shifted to the foraging grounds along South Africa's east coast. Her PhD research investigates the ecological roles played by sea turtles on reefs.
Dos Santos' research focuses on understanding the movements of sea turtles, specifically through an acoustic telemetry study of green turtles and hawksbills on Aliwal Shoal Marine Protected Area on the KZN South Coast. The study aims to learn about the turtles' origins, population numbers, movements, and feeding behaviour.
The Turtle Talk event will take place at the Fish Eagle Café, Crocworld Adventure and Conservation Centre, Scottburgh, on October 31 at 10am. Bookings are essential, and attendees are required to RSVP by October 26, 2026, to [email protected] The event offers a unique opportunity for visitors to learn about sea turtle research and conservation efforts.
The conservation talk and breakfast event is part of Crocworld's efforts to promote conservation and education. By hosting events like this, Crocworld aims to raise awareness about the importance of protecting the environment and conserving biodiversity. The centre's Conservation Talk programme has been well-received, and this event is expected to be popular among visitors.
The event on October 31 will provide a fascinating opportunity for attendees to learn about sea turtles and the important research being done on the KZN South Coast.
