Ignace Nsengiyumva, the RIB chief in Gatsibo, stated that the district had been plagued by crimes related to assault and battery, often fueled by excessive drinking. He noted that the government's intervention has led to a substantial decrease in such cases, and expressed optimism that the trend will continue. Nsengiyumva urged residents to avoid activities that could lead to conflicts and to refrain from consuming illicit substances.
The low-quality liquor, often referred to as "ibyumabyo," was found to be a major contributor to violent behavior and crimes in the area. Residents who have been affected by the crackdown have expressed relief and appreciation for the government's efforts. Epimaque Twagirimana, a local resident, stated that he used to consume the low-quality liquor regularly but has since stopped and noticed a significant improvement in his life.
Emelienne Muhongerwa, a resident of Kabarore sector, shared a similar story, stating that her husband's excessive drinking had a negative impact on their family life. She expressed gratitude for the government's efforts to curb the sale of low-quality liquor, which has helped her husband to stop drinking and focus on his family.
Richard Gasana, the mayor of Gatsibo district, urged residents to make the most of the opportunity to turn their lives around. He encouraged those who had been affected by excessive drinking to seek help and engage in productive activities to rebuild their lives.
