The 2027 Times Higher Education global university rankings have been released, and Covenant University, the University of Ibadan (UI), and the University of Lagos (UNILAG) have emerged as the top tertiary institutions in Nigeria. The three leading academic institutions were placed within the 801st and 1000th bracket globally. This ranking marks a significant milestone for the Nigerian educational sector, with the country recording five additional institutions on the global list.
The five newly ranked institutions making their debut on the prestigious list include Osun State University, the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID), Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Kwara State University, and Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike. This expansion takes Nigeria’s total tally from 24 recognized universities in the 2026 edition to 29 in the current rankings. The rankings evaluated 2,297 institutions across 118 countries and territories using 17 comprehensive performance indicators.
The competition among the top three domestic institutions revealed fascinating shifts in academic performance. The University of Ibadan had previously overtaken Covenant University as the top Nigerian institution in the 2026 rankings released last October. However, Covenant University has fiercely reclaimed its leading status, tying for the top spot in this latest evaluation. Ahmadu Bello University and Bayero University rounded out the nation’s top five, securing the fourth and fifth positions respectively.
The Times Higher Education evaluation rigorously ranks universities based on five core pillars: teaching, research environment, research quality, international outlook, and industry engagement. While the top three Nigerian universities achieved similar overall scores ranging from 36.4 to 40.1, their individual strengths varied significantly across the specific categories. The University of Ibadan dominated in the teaching metric with a score of 31.2, outpacing Covenant’s 21.4 and UNILAG’s 21.2.
In terms of research quality, UNILAG took the lead with an impressive 67.8, closely followed by UI at 64.9, leaving Covenant trailing at 49.8. However, Covenant University secured its top-tier position by heavily outperforming the federal institutions in both industry engagement and international outlook, scoring 61.0 and 48.6 respectively—areas where both UI and UNILAG lagged.
On a global scale, the University of Oxford remarkably retained its number one position globally for an 11th consecutive year. Regionally, the University of Cape Town remained the highest-ranked institution in sub-Saharan Africa, climbing the global ladder to land at a joint 147th position, up from 164th in the previous edition.

The top 10 institutions and their global ranking bands are: Covenant University (801-1000), University of Ibadan (801-1000), University of Lagos (801-1000), Ahmadu Bello University (1001-1200), Bayero University (1001-1200), Landmark University (1001-1200), University of Ilorin (1001-1200), Babcock University (1201-1400), Osun State University (1201-1400), and University of Nigeria, Nsukka (1201-1400).
