Controversial North West businessman Suliman Carrim has been granted bail of R100 000 by the Pretoria Magistrate's Court. The magistrate ruled that Carrim had presented sufficient grounds to warrant his release. This decision comes after Carrim's arrest at OR Tambo International Airport on October 15. He was preparing to board a flight to Saudi Arabia via the United Arab Emirates with his family.
As part of his bail conditions, Carrim must attend all court proceedings. His passport and other travel documents must be surrendered to the investigating officer. Additionally, he is prohibited from applying for new travel documents. These conditions aim to ensure Carrim's availability for his upcoming court appearances. The case against him was postponed to December 8, 2026, for disclosure of the case docket.
Carrim faces a charge of contravening Section 6(1) of the Commissions Act 8 of 1947. He allegedly failed to appear before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, despite being warned to do so on August 14. His failure to appear prompted the opening of a criminal case, which was investigated by the Commission's Recommendations Task Team.
However, Carrim remains in custody due to another case against him. He faces two counts of attempted theft, two counts of uttering, and charges of money laundering. According to the National Prosecuting Authority, Carrim allegedly attempted to steal two vehicles belonging to ABSA. He is accused of acting in collusion with his employees to use fraudulent documentation to smuggle the vehicles out of South Africa.
Carrim's co-accused, Malawian nationals Mike Phiri Mussa and Ibrahim Zakes, were arrested while attempting to cross into Zimbabwe through the Beitbridge Border Post with the vehicles. Carrim was arrested on October 21, and his case was postponed for a formal bail application. The case against his co-accused is scheduled for pre-trial proceedings in the Musina Regional Court on October 27.
The National Prosecuting Authority is pursuing multiple charges against Carrim. The attempted theft case involves allegations of collusion with his employees. The authority will present its case against Carrim and his co-accused in the coming court appearances. The Pretoria Magistrate's Court has granted Carrim bail in one of the cases, but he remains in custody due to the other charges against him.
The case against Carrim highlights the complexities of South Africa's justice system. Multiple cases and charges are pending against him, with various court appearances scheduled. As the cases progress, the court will determine the merits of the charges against Carrim and his co-accused.
