Work on the Accra–Kumasi bypass projects has resumed after contractors returned to the various sections, signalling renewed momentum on one of Ghana's key road corridors. The projects aim to add extra capacity and ease the heavy congestion that has long plagued the Accra–Kumasi route. According to Roads and Highways Minister Kwame Agbodza, the government remains determined to finish the bypasses by the end of 2027.
Minister Agbodza made the announcement during an inspection of the project sites. He stressed that the government is committed to completing the project, just like other priority projects. The contractors handling the different stretches also reaffirmed their readiness to deliver within the planned timelines. This development is expected to bring relief to motorists who have been enduring congestion on the Accra–Kumasi route.
Progress on the various sections of the bypass project now stands at 77 percent on the Osino South Bound, 70 percent on the Osino North Bound, 74.6 percent on the Anyinam South Bound, and 99 percent on the Anyinam North Bound. Additionally, the Enyiresi South Bound is at 65 percent, the Enyiresi North Bound at 64 percent, the Konongo South Bound at 74 percent, and the Konongo North Bound at 60 percent.
Once completed, the bypasses are expected to significantly ease congestion on the Accra–Kumasi route. Meanwhile, rehabilitation continues on the existing Accra–Kumasi Highway. Crews are carrying out sectional repairs on the worst-hit portions, to be followed by a full asphaltic overlay across the corridor. This aims to keep the current road in better shape while the new bypasses take shape.
Minister Agbodza urged motorists still using the existing highway to remain patient and careful as the dual works continue. He cautioned against speeding and risky overtaking, warning that impatience could cost lives. The Minister stressed the importance of exercising patience and safe driving practices to avoid accidents.
The Minister gave an assurance that the government is focused on finishing the projects and providing the additional capacity needed for smoother travel between Accra and Kumasi. He emphasized that the project will be completed to create more capacity, allowing drivers to travel at a more consistent speed between the two cities.
