The construction of the athlete village for the 12th Indian Ocean Games, set to take place in Comoros in August 2027, is progressing at a rapid pace. The project, located in Moindzaza Djumbé, aims to build 200 villas to accommodate athletes. Less than a month after the launch of the construction site, four villas have already been built, and finishing work on around ten others is nearing completion.
The project has a budget of 14 billion Comorian francs, financed through a banking pool comprising local banks such as Union des Meck, Meck-Moroni, Sanduk d'Anjouan, Exim bank, and Afg bank. The construction site, spanning 30 hectares, is a massive undertaking that requires the coordination of seven companies, including two Chinese and five Comorian firms, and employs between 800 and 1,000 workers.
According to Faouzia Vitry, Director General of the Société de Projet de Village (Spv), the project's success is a source of national pride, with 100% of the financing coming from Comorian banks. The construction process involves simultaneous work on multiple sites, with a goal of completing 20 villas per month over the next ten months. Attoumane Said, head of mission for the Société de Génie Civil (Sogc), expressed confidence in meeting the deadline.
Each villa will be built on a 400m2 plot and will feature four rooms for athletes, a kitchen, toilets, and a small lounge area. The construction schedule is aggressive, with plans to start tiling work in January 2027. By that time, the village is expected to be nearly complete. The project's infrastructure includes not only the villas but also roads, a security system, water, electricity, and communication networks.
The construction site is a hive of activity, with workers laboring day and night to meet the deadline. Bulldozers and other heavy machinery are scattered across the site, clearing land and preparing it for construction. The project's progress is a testament to the country's ability to undertake large-scale infrastructure projects.
Faouzia Vitry emphasized that the project's success is a collective effort, with the entire country coming together to support the initiative. The Indian Ocean Games are a significant event for the region, and Comoros is determined to host a successful tournament. The athlete village is a critical component of the games, and its construction is a major milestone.
The delivery of the village is scheduled for May 31, 2027, two months before the start of the games. With the current pace of progress, it appears that the project will be completed on time. The 2027 Indian Ocean Games are expected to bring together athletes from across the region, and Comoros is committed to providing a world-class experience for its guests.
