The AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) has reported a significant increase in condom demand in Cross River State, Nigeria. According to Aruk Ene, AHF's HIV/AIDS Prevention Coordinator, the foundation distributed over 200,000 condoms in the state within the past six months, with a large number distributed in Calabar. This surge in demand contradicts the common perception that condom usage is declining.
Ene disclosed that on February 13, a day before Valentine's Day, AHF distributed over 50,000 condoms within a few hours, accompanied by HIV tests for several individuals. The high demand for condoms was evident, with many people requesting the products whenever they were made available. AHF also planned to distribute 10,000 condoms during a Walkathon event organized by the Healthy Billionaires Club in Calabar to promote healthy living.
Ene emphasized the importance of using appropriate condom sizes, as discomfort from using the wrong size could discourage some people from using them. She advised people to use condoms correctly and encouraged residents to regularly check their HIV status. Those who test positive can be linked to treatment and laboratory monitoring with their consent, while those who test negative are advised and provided with necessary preventive drugs.
The AHF's efforts to combat HIV and other sexually transmitted infections are crucial in Cross River State, which attracts people from neighboring states and Cameroon due to its location. However, Ene noted that the foundation could not determine which sexually transmitted infection, among HIV, hepatitis, and syphilis, was most prevalent in the state.
