The urban park of Conakry, spanning over 13 hectares, was officially opened on September 30, 2026. Funded by Rio Tinto as part of its support for the Simandou 2040 program, the park aims to provide the population with a modern space dedicated to sports, culture, leisure, and community activities. The park features a large sports complex with several facilities, including eight mini-football fields, a main field with synthetic turf meeting FIFA standards, five basketball courts, and two tennis courts.
The infrastructure also includes an Olympic-standard athletics track and a multisport field that can host various disciplines such as handball and volleyball. Kadé Camara, Deputy Managing Director of the Guinea Development Board (GDB), presented the park as a new asset for Conakry's attractiveness. She highlighted that the park, along with other leisure spaces like Camayenne Beach and Lake Gbassicolo, enhances the territory's appeal and embodies a modern, welcoming, and inclusive Guinea.
Beyond sports and leisure, the site is expected to become a space for promoting Guinean culture, featuring music, dance, crafts, gastronomy, and local creativity. The park may also contribute to dynamizing the local economy through events, catering, and various services that will be developed. Kadé Camara emphasized the involvement of Guinean companies and expertise in the project's realization, praising the contribution of GPC and the work of engineers, technicians, and workers mobilized on the site.
Elias Scafida from Rio Tinto stated that the group fully funded the park's construction and presented it as a space for families, athletes, and future generations. He described the park as a symbol of pride and opportunity for Guinea, reflecting the group's commitment to supporting the country's ambitious urban modernization program through quality infrastructure.
Djiba Diakité, Minister and Director of the President's Cabinet, presided over the inauguration ceremony and praised the transformation of the site. He recalled the site's previous state of degradation and its rehabilitation for the benefit of the population. Diakité also announced future cultural equipment, including a media center that will serve as a space for knowledge, exchange, and meetings for young people, the elderly, and future generations.
The minister emphasized the need to preserve this new infrastructure and invited the population to take care of it. He thanked Rio Tinto for this initiative and expressed gratitude to strategic partners and members of the Simandou Strategic Committee. The inauguration of the Conakry urban park reinforces the offer of public spaces dedicated to sports, leisure, culture, and community activities in the capital.
