A mission from the Islamic Bank, led by its country administrator, Omar Davis, recently met with the Comoros government to discuss financing for agricultural projects. The meeting, attended by Finance Minister Moussa Abdérémane and Agriculture Minister Dr. Daniel Ali Bandar, focused on supporting the development of agricultural value chains in the country. The Islamic Bank's mission aims to explore opportunities for collaboration with the Comoros government to boost the agricultural sector.

One of the key projects discussed is the development of the poultry industry, which involves creating an integrated production chain from feed production to industrial processing. The project includes several components, such as producing animal feed, setting up an incubator for chick production, raising broiler chickens, and establishing an industrial unit for processing poultry products. The goal is to support local production sustainably and reduce difficulties in supplying different parts of the value chain.

The Comoros government plans to follow up on the poultry project with initiatives focused on cassava, sweet potatoes, and other agricultural products. These projects would involve developing their transformation into flour, packaging, and marketing. The transformed products could be destined for the Comorian market and regional markets. The government and the Islamic Bank would jointly finance these projects.

The proposed mechanism also includes a credit line from Islamic finance for project proponents in the concerned sectors. According to the Finance Minister, the financing conditions are more accessible than those offered by the local market, with the objective of encouraging young people and women to invest in agricultural production and marketing. The infrastructure put in place should also help structure the value chains and facilitate access to financing for Comorian operators.

The meeting also addressed the financing of the 2027 Indian Ocean Island Games village project. The Minister specified that no Islamic Bank financing is currently planned for the Olympic village itself, which is entirely financed by local banks. However, the government wants to explore the possibility of setting up adapted financing instruments with the Islamic Bank for the construction of housing for sale and access to real estate property.

The discussions also touched on the development of Islamic finance in Comoros. The government is working on a strategy to establish a dedicated financing line for Islamic microfinance. The possible creation of an Islamic bank in Comoros is also part of the ongoing reflections, in liaison with the Central Bank of Comoros, to examine the necessary conditions for the development of this type of financing in the country.

The Islamic Bank's delegation is expected to examine the proposals and formulate financing prospects. The collaboration between the Comoros government and the Islamic Bank aims to support the country's agricultural development and promote economic growth. The projects discussed have the potential to create jobs and improve food security in Comoros.
