Community leaders in Traditional Authority Kyungu, Karonga District, have expressed gratitude to the National Initiative for Civic Education (Nice) Trust for equipping them with skills to monitor the reformed K5 billion Constituency Development Fund (CDF). This initiative aims to promote transparency and accountability in the implementation of CDF projects. The awareness session, conducted by Nice Trust, was held on Wednesday at Gumi.
Group village head Mwanyesya I praised Nice Trust for enlightening the community on the reformed CDF projects and their guidelines. He noted that previously, people were unaware that they could monitor projects they had identified. The community leaders appreciated the empowerment, which enables them to play a watchdog role in ensuring that CDF projects are implemented transparently and accountably.
Community member Daniel Lughali emphasized that the knowledge gained will help people remain vigilant during the implementation of CDF projects. He stated that an empowered community can provide checks and balances to prevent corruption when employing locals for CDF projects, selecting beneficiaries for bursaries and loans, and ensuring that projects are completed on time.
Lizzie Mwale, assistant to the Lupembe community development committee, noted that the awareness will enable the community to track projects and ensure transparency, accountability, and timely completion. This will help to prevent corruption and ensure that CDF projects benefit the community as intended.
Nathan Sakala, Nice Karonga district programmes officer, explained that the organization aimed to empower communities to track projects in their areas. He expressed hope that the capacity building will be rolled out in the district's six constituencies, enabling communities to play a watchdog role and report corrupt activities to relevant authorities.
The reformed K5 billion CDF is designed to promote community development and improve the lives of citizens. By empowering communities to monitor projects, Nice Trust aims to ensure that the fund is used effectively and efficiently. The organization believes that community involvement is crucial in preventing corruption and promoting accountability.
The civic awareness session conducted by Nice Trust is part of a broader effort to promote civic education and community empowerment in Malawi.
