A community initiative, the Sudanese Initiative for Social Cohesion, has been working to complete reconciliation efforts between the Fulat and Masalit tribes in South Darfur. The initiative comes after armed confrontations broke out in the Qreidah locality of South Darfur state since last Saturday. The initiative emphasizes the importance of dialogue, containing differences, and preventing individual incidents from escalating into large-scale tribal conflicts.
A delegation from the initiative, led by Umda Juma'a Dqalu Musa, the head of the initiative, and his deputy, Saleh Masar, visited the Qreidah and Tils localities. They met separately with the tribal leaders of the Masalit and Fulat tribes, as well as the Qreidah locality security committee and the mediation committee tasked with calming and reconciling the situation. The security committee briefed the delegation on the circumstances of the events.
The events began with an individual incident within the Abuja market in Qreidah city, which later developed into tribal tensions. This required the intervention of tribal leaders and security agencies, who imposed measures to contain the situation. These measures included deploying buffer forces to protect civilians and secure the area. The security committee reported that the incidents resulted in several deaths and injuries on both sides.
The mediation committee, led by Umda Tolha Khawf Al-Shanahi, has been working to calm the situation and bring the parties together. The committee has provided several proposals for final solutions, focusing on mechanisms to deal with individual incidents and prevent them from escalating into tribal conflicts. The committee's efforts aim to finalize reconciliation arrangements in the coming days.
The Masalit administration, led by King Qreidah Adel Hassan Al-Malik and his deputy, emphasized that the incidents were not planned as a tribal conflict. They expressed their desire to move past the events and restore normal relations with the Fulat tribe. The administration requested that the transitional government enhance the security presence in the locality and provide forces capable of deterring rogue elements.
The Fulat tribal leaders, led by Nazir Mohammed Al-Fatih Al-Samani and his deputy, Ibrahim Idris, welcomed the initiative's efforts and the mediation. They stated that the incident began as an individual incident before escalating due to provocations and rogue elements.
