The 125th Nairobi International Trade Fair has opened at the Jamhuri Park Showground, attracting over 400 exhibitors from Kenya and abroad. The seven-day event, running until October 4, is expected to draw about 600,000 visitors. The fair's theme, 'Promoting Climate Smart Agriculture, Trade Initiatives for Sustainable Economic Growth,' reflects the growing importance of climate change mitigation in the agricultural sector.
Agricultural Society of Kenya (ASK) chief executive Batram Muthoka stated that the exhibition would focus on technologies and innovations aimed at helping farmers adapt to changing weather patterns while improving productivity. The seed sector will showcase varieties developed to withstand high temperatures and excessive rainfall. Demonstration plots will allow farmers to see how different varieties perform before adopting them.
The livestock sector will feature breeds adapted to changing climatic conditions. Farmers will be introduced to technologies such as drones for spraying crops and other digital farming solutions. This will enable them to make informed decisions about their farming practices and improve their yields.
ASK Nairobi International Trade Fair chairperson Levi Mukhweso noted that the event had expanded from about 300 exhibitors last year to over 400 this year. This reflects increased interest in agricultural technology and trade. The fair has attracted exhibitors from over 10 countries, including Thailand, Ireland, Tanzania, Uganda, Ghana, and Zambia.
Thailand has brought agricultural machinery, irrigation equipment, and tractors to the fair. Shannon Ferry, part of the Thai agricultural delegation, stated that the country was showcasing equipment ranging from power tillers to large tractors, irrigation systems, and water pumps. The goal is to demonstrate technologies that can be adapted to the needs of small-scale farmers.
The organisers expect visitor numbers to rise by about 35 per cent from last year's estimated 400,000. Farmers, students, families, and businesses are expected to attend the exhibition. The fair will provide a platform for exhibitors to showcase their products and services, and for visitors to learn about the latest developments in climate-smart agriculture.
