The Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN) has called on bankers to prioritize innovation, integrity, and accountability in their operations. Speaking at the 2026 Stream II Chartered Bankers Induction and Prize Awards Day in Lagos, CIBN President Dr. Dele Alabi emphasized the need for bankers to anticipate emerging developments, exercise sound judgment in uncertain circumstances, and harness innovation to create value while remaining anchored in ethical principles.
Dr. Alabi stated that future-readiness is not just about adapting to change, but also about anticipating emerging developments and exercising sound judgment in uncertain circumstances. He noted that technological advancements, artificial intelligence, economic uncertainty, and geoeconomic fragmentation are among the forces reshaping how institutions operate and the skills professionals will require.
The CIBN President emphasized that effective leadership begins with the knowledge and judgment required to navigate complexity, and that competencies and skills development are critical for all bankers. He also noted that the IMPACT Vision for the Institute, themed "Consolidating Our Local Impact, Enhancing Our Global Relevance," prioritizes innovation, integrity, and accountability.
Dr. Alabi urged the bankers to carry the principles of innovation, integrity, and accountability beyond the ceremony and influence their decisions, leadership, and service to customers and the wider economy. He advised the inductees that their qualification has earned them admission into the profession, but the quality of their conduct from that point forward will determine the value they add to it.
The CIBN inducted 2,178 new bankers, and Dr. Alabi encouraged them to remain steadfast in their commitment to continuous learning, professional excellence, ethical leadership, and meaningful impact. He concluded by citing Oprah Winfrey's inspiring words, urging the bankers to create the highest, grandest vision possible for their lives and remain committed to their goals.
The event, themed "The Future-Ready Banker: Leadership, Innovation and Ethics in a Disruptive Global Economy," had Dr. Alabi emphasizing the need for bankers to provide leadership when established approaches are being challenged and to remain grounded in the standards on which confidence in the profession depends.
Dr. Alabi's address was part of the CIBN's efforts to promote professionalism and excellence in the banking industry, and he congratulated the inductees on their significant milestone and wished them every success in their careers.
