Geely Auto, a prominent Chinese automaker, has unveiled a revolutionary ultrafast charging technology that can charge an electric vehicle (EV) battery from 10% to 70% in just 4.5 minutes. This significant development positions Geely alongside industry leaders BYD and CATL, which have also rolled out impressive ultrafast charging capabilities this year. The rapid charging technology aims to alleviate range anxiety, a major barrier to EV adoption.

The ultrafast charging technology is a crucial step towards making EVs more appealing to consumers. Currently, some of the fastest-charging EVs available in the US take around 20 minutes to charge. In contrast, BYD's new "blade" EV battery can charge an EV from 10% to 70% in 5 minutes, while CATL's technology can achieve the same charge in 3 minutes and 44 seconds. These advancements demonstrate China's leadership in the EV industry.

According to Lei Xing, an independent analyst of China's auto industry, China is far ahead of other countries in terms of ultrafast charging technology, with multiple players competing in the market. The country's automakers are focused on eliminating range anxiety by narrowing the gap between EV charging and traditional petrol refuelling. Stephen Chan, an analyst at S&P Global Ratings, notes that ultrafast charging is a key strategy for Chinese automakers to set themselves apart and improve sales.

Despite the breakthroughs in ultrafast charging technology, experts caution that there are still significant challenges to overcome. Chris Liu, a senior analyst at Omdia, highlights the importance of ensuring that batteries can accept high levels of current quickly and repeatedly without overheating or degrading. The industry must also address the issue of charging infrastructure, as most of China's public charging stations currently operate below 1 megawatt.

The competition among Chinese automakers is intense, with over 100 domestic passenger car brands vying for market share. Domestic car sales have been declining in China, and automakers are increasingly looking to export cars overseas. To stay competitive, companies like BYD are investing heavily in ultrafast charging infrastructure. BYD aims to have 20,000 superfast charging stations by the end of this year, with plans to expand to 90,000 stations by 2028.

China's leadership in ultrafast EV charging technology is evident, with the country's automakers and suppliers driving innovation in the industry. In contrast, the US is still behind in terms of ultrafast charging speeds. Neal Ganguli, a partner at AlixPartners, notes that while the US is growing its battery-charging network rapidly, it lags behind China's ultrafast charging capabilities.

As the EV industry continues to evolve, the focus on ultrafast charging technology is expected to intensify. With companies like Geely, BYD, and CATL pushing the boundaries of what is possible, consumers can expect to see more efficient and convenient charging options in the future. The success of these technologies will depend on various factors, including the scale of charging networks and grid updates.
