The Government of China has provided Kenya with a $2 million cash grant to enhance Ebola preparedness and support drought relief efforts. The grant, equivalent to Ksh 260 million, was formally handed over to the National Treasury in Nairobi by Chinese Ambassador to Kenya, Guo Haiyan, and Treasury PS Dr. Chris Kiptoo. This financial assistance aims to reinforce public health preparedness and help Kenya respond to humanitarian and economic pressures associated with drought.

Half of the funding, $1 million, is allocated to enhancing Kenya's capacity to prevent and respond to Ebola. The funds will support initiatives to strengthen Ebola virus disease preparedness infrastructure in high-risk and very high-risk counties. This includes strengthening surveillance systems, improving laboratory and diagnostic capabilities, and equipping health facilities to detect and manage suspected cases. The allocation seeks to enhance Kenya's capacity to manage public health risks.

The remaining $1 million will fund government interventions addressing the effects of drought. The support follows a request from the Kenyan government and reflects China's commitment to supporting Kenya's development priorities. Ambassador Guo stated that the assistance is a testament to the friendship between the Chinese and Kenyan peoples.

During the handover ceremony, Dr. Kiptoo commended China for its prompt response to Kenya's request and for providing timely financial assistance. He noted that the grant would aid the country's efforts in epidemic prevention and drought relief. The grant contributes to the broader development cooperation between Kenya and China.

The latest grant is part of China's commitment to deepening development cooperation with Kenya under the frameworks of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) and the Global Development Initiative (GDI). China has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Kenya's development priorities.

The Ebola preparedness allocation comes as Kenya seeks to enhance its capacity to manage public health risks, particularly in high-risk counties. Preparedness measures will include strengthening surveillance systems, improving laboratory and diagnostic capabilities, enhancing infection prevention and control, and equipping health facilities.

The grant is a significant development in the Kenya-China partnership, demonstrating China's continued support for Kenya's development priorities. Key initiatives under the partnership include public health, economic development, and humanitarian priorities.
