The Changan Deepal S05, a range-extender electric vehicle, has been launched in South Africa by Jameel Motors, the official importer and distributor of Changan. The compact SUV is priced at R699,000, including VAT, and will be available at Changan dealers from early November. The Deepal S05 is designed to bring together the appeal of electric driving and the reassurance of a petrol-powered range extender.

The Deepal S05 features a single rear electric motor producing 160 kW and 320 N.m, driving the rear wheels only. The vehicle is powered by a 27.28 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery, providing an electric-only range of 175 km. A 1.5-litre petrol engine, rated at 72 kW and 125 N.m, acts as a generator for the motor and battery, extending the total range to over 1,000 km.

The Deepal S05 boasts impressive performance, with a claimed 0-100 km/h time of under eight seconds and a top speed of 175 km/h. The battery features a preheating function and supports AC charging as well as DC fast charging, which can charge the battery from 30 to 80% in 20 minutes. Additionally, the vehicle offers vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability, allowing the high-voltage battery to power or charge external electrical devices.

Inside the Deepal S05, a 15.4-inch "Sunflower" rotating touchscreen provides navigation, voice control, Bluetooth, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, linked to 14 speakers. An augmented-reality head-up display, powered by a Snapdragon 8155 chip, projects a 50-inch image. The SUV also features a panoramic sunroof, heated and ventilated front seats trimmed in microfibre leather, and a 540-degree camera.

The Deepal S05 measures 4,620 mm long on a 2,880 mm wheelbase, weighing 1,847 kg and offering 464 litres of luggage space. The vehicle comes with standard Level 2 driver assistance features, including adaptive cruise control, lane centring, and traffic jam assist, as well as autonomous emergency braking and blind-spot detection.

The Deepal S05 is available in five colour options: Moonlight White, Ganymede Grey, Mercury Silver, Deep Space Black, and Starry Blue, with black or orange interiors. The vehicle comes with a five-year/90,000 km service plan, a five-year/150,000 km warranty, and an eight-year/150,000 km battery warranty. An optional maintenance plan is also available.

According to Chelsy Pinto, General Manager: Marketing & Product of Jameel Motors, the Deepal S05 is designed to offer customers the benefits of electric driving with the reassurance of a petrol-powered range extender. The vehicle's launch in South Africa marks the introduction of a new model to the local market, expanding Changan's range-extended electric vehicle offerings.
