Nigeria's Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, has emphasized the need for sustained investment in indigenous space technology, research, and innovation. This call was made during the inaugural Defence Space Administration (DSA) Day celebration, themed 'Space Power and National Security.' The CDS highlighted the importance of leveraging space technology to strengthen national security and enhance the operational effectiveness of the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN).

The CDS commended the DSA for its notable achievements, including the launch of DelSat-1, a significant milestone in Nigeria's space exploration efforts. Additionally, the DSA has established a geospatial intelligence infrastructure, which will enhance the AFN's situational awareness and operational capabilities. The deployment of a Modular Earth Observation Outpost at the Headquarters of Operation HADIN KAI further underscores the DSA's commitment to leveraging space technology for national security.

General Oluyede charged the DSA to focus on strengthening indigenous research and development, ensuring the reliability and security of space-based products, and deepening their integration into joint and inter-agency military operations. This, he believes, will enable the AFN to address emerging security challenges more effectively. The CDS also stressed the importance of collaboration among the Armed Forces, academic institutions, industries, and national agencies to drive indigenous innovation.

The Chief of Defence Space Administration, Major General Philip Ilodibia, welcomed the CDS's remarks, emphasizing the need for stronger synergy among the Nigerian Army, Navy, and Air Force. This collaboration, he believes, will enhance joint operational effectiveness and Nigeria's overall defence capabilities. Major General Ilodibia also called for sustained collaboration with stakeholders, including the National Space Research and Development Agency and Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited.

The DSA Day celebration marked a significant milestone in Nigeria's space exploration efforts, highlighting the country's progress in leveraging space technology for national security and development. The event provided a platform for stakeholders to discuss the challenges and opportunities in Nigeria's space sector, as well as strategies for advancing the country's space capabilities.

General Oluyede's call for sustained investment in indigenous space technology aligns with Nigeria's broader efforts to develop its space sector. The country has made significant progress in recent years, including the establishment of the Defence Space School in Orogun, which has commenced academic activities. This institution will play a crucial role in developing the skills and expertise needed to drive Nigeria's space exploration efforts.

The CDS's emphasis on indigenous space technology development is critical to Nigeria's national security and development. By harnessing space technology, Nigeria can enhance its defence capabilities, improve its situational awareness, and drive economic growth. The country's progress in space exploration has the potential to inspire a new generation of scientists, engineers, and innovators, driving Nigeria's development and growth.
