The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has intensified efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s financial links with Asia through recent engagements with key financial institutions and market stakeholders in Singapore. The engagements, led by CBN Governor, Olayemi Cardoso, aimed to foster cooperation, develop financial markets, and create opportunities for investment, trade, and financial innovation.

During the engagements, the CBN delegation discussed financial-sector development, regulation, market connectivity, and innovation with the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS). The meeting provided an opportunity for both sides to share experiences and explore areas where stronger institutional relationships could support financial-market development and the adoption of emerging technologies.

The CBN and Global Finance & Technology Network (GFTN) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) establishing a framework for cooperation on financial innovation. The agreement is expected to facilitate connections between relevant institutions and innovation ecosystems while creating opportunities for collaboration between Nigeria and Singapore.

At the Nigeria–Asia Financial Connectivity Dialogue, hosted at J.P. Morgan’s Singapore offices, Cardoso outlined Nigeria’s plans to develop deeper, more liquid, and internationally connected financial markets. He highlighted recent reforms in the financial sector aimed at providing a foundation for a new phase of market development.

Cardoso emphasized the importance of credible monetary policy, stronger governance, improved market operations, and predictable regulations in attracting and retaining long-term domestic and international investment. He noted that stabilizing the financial system was not an end in itself but a foundation for broader participation by institutional investors and closer links with international financial markets.

The Nigeria–Asia Financial Connectivity Dialogue brought together investors, financial institutions, businesses, and Nigerians living and working across Asia. A panel discussion focused on Nigeria’s reform trajectory, capital formation, foreign exchange market confidence, and the development of deeper financial markets and infrastructure required to sustain international participation.

The CBN engagements in Singapore formed part of a wider programme of institutional and market engagements across Asia, including further meetings scheduled in Beijing. The governor identified opportunities to strengthen links between Nigerian and Asian banks and market institutions, improve payment and settlement channels, and increase participation by Nigerians living and working in Asia.
