Ghana Football Association (GFA) communications director Henry Asante Twum has revealed that Carlos Queiroz decided to step down as Black Stars coach because of the team's poor results. Queiroz, a Portuguese coach, was appointed on a short-term contract to replace Otto Addo ahead of the 2026 World Cup. He guided the Black Stars to the knockout stage of the tournament in North America, marking Ghana's first appearance in the last 16 since the 2010 World Cup.

The GFA retained Queiroz to lead the team into the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers. However, Ghana's poor start to the qualifying campaign led to the two parties mutually agreeing to end their relationship. The Black Stars are bottom of Group C after losing their opening two matches against Côte d'Ivoire and The Gambia, leaving them without a point. Queiroz's seven-match tenure ended with one win, two draws, and four defeats.

Asante Twum stated that Queiroz acknowledged the team's lack of positive results and decided to move on. "Carlos Queiroz admits that the results have not been great, and he has decided to move on," he told Kessben FM. The GFA and the Sports Ministry have since formed a five-member committee to identify a successor, with its report and recommendation due to be submitted on 9 October.

Ghana will return to action in November with back-to-back matches against Somalia at the Accra Sports Stadium as they look to revive their AFCON qualifying campaign. The Black Stars are seeking to avoid missing out on a second consecutive Africa Cup of Nations tournament after failing to qualify for the 2025 edition in Morocco.

The team is currently without a coach, and the GFA is working to find a replacement. The five-member committee formed by the GFA and the Sports Ministry will submit its report and recommendation on 9 October. This will help the GFA to quickly identify a new coach and prepare the team for the upcoming matches.

Queiroz's departure comes after a disappointing start to the AFCON qualifiers. The Black Stars have struggled to find form, and the team's poor results have led to the departure of the coach. The GFA is working to ensure that the team bounces back and qualifies for the next Africa Cup of Nations tournament.
