Caritas Freetown has launched a 10-day free surgical campaign at Christ the King Hospital in Waterloo, Western Area Rural District, in partnership with a medical team from Málaga, Spain. The campaign, which runs from November 3 to 13, 2026, aims to provide surgical treatment to 120 vulnerable patients who cannot afford medical care. The initiative is a collaboration with the International Solidarity Cooperation Association Sierra de las Nieves (ACISS) under the theme “Health, Hope for Life.”

The Spanish medical team consists of five specialist surgeons, two nurses, an anaesthetist, and a specialist in microbiology and parasitology. They will work alongside local healthcare professionals to deliver surgical services and support patients throughout the medical mission. The programme goes beyond surgical operations, as patients will also receive postoperative treatment, follow-up care, essential medicines, and other surgical supplies.

Executive Director of Caritas Freetown, Rev. Fr. Peter Alpha Leo Konteh, welcomed the Spanish delegation on behalf of the Archbishop of Freetown, the Archdiocese, and the Caritas Freetown family. He expressed gratitude to the medical professionals for travelling to Sierra Leone to offer their skills and services to people in need. The initiative will give patients with untreated medical conditions an opportunity to receive surgery and improve their health.

The campaign is part of the ongoing cooperation between Caritas Freetown and ACISS to improve access to healthcare for disadvantaged communities in Sierra Leone. The Spanish specialists will also support the hospital’s laboratory and work with local doctors, nurses, and other healthcare workers through training, practical knowledge-sharing, and professional exchange.

Caritas Freetown has recognised the contributions of local health workers and other supporters involved in the programme. The organisation also expressed appreciation to the Spanish delegation for its continued commitment to the partnership. The latest campaign continues a joint effort to bring essential surgical services closer to patients who might otherwise struggle to afford treatment.

The free surgical campaign is a significant initiative that will have a positive impact on the lives of 120 patients. The programme will not only provide surgical treatment but also essential medicines and postoperative care. This will help to improve the health and wellbeing of patients who have been struggling with untreated medical conditions.

The partnership between Caritas Freetown and the Spanish medical team demonstrates the importance of collaboration in improving access to healthcare. The initiative is a testament to the commitment of both organisations to providing essential medical services to disadvantaged communities in Sierra Leone. The campaign will also help to build the capacity of local healthcare professionals through training and knowledge-sharing.
