Capital Sportiff Sports Club, a prominent sports club in Abuja, recently marked its 22nd anniversary with a Founders' Day celebration. The event, held at New Capital School in Asokoro, the club's home ground, brought together members to reflect on over two decades of friendship, fitness, and camaraderie. The club was founded in 2004 by a group of like-minded individuals who shared a passion for sports and community.
The anniversary celebration featured a round-robin football tournament among three teams: Team PU, Team AVM, and Team Vitus. Team PU started the competition with a 2-1 victory over Team AVM, while Team Vitus edged AVM by a goal in a disputed penalty decision. The final match between Team AVM and Team Vitus ended in an entertaining draw, showcasing the competitive spirit of the club's members.
Dr. Victor Udeh, a founding member of the club known as "Machine," recalled the modest beginnings of Capital Sportiff in 2004. He expressed satisfaction with the club's growth over the years and urged members to preserve the bond that had sustained the club for over two decades. Udeh's sentiments highlight the importance of community and friendship in the club's enduring success.
Nwosu Christian Okechukwu, a member known as "Get Some" or "DJ Khaled," reflected on the club's evolution from a fitness-focused group to a strong network of friends. He noted that the passion and emotions displayed during the football matches reflected the enduring spirit of the club. Okechukwu also expressed hope that the club would continue to attract younger members to take the baton.
Oladimeji Fabiyi, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, identified friendship, comradeship, and family values as some of the club's major achievements. He noted that members from different ethnic backgrounds had remained united, and the club had served as a support network during difficult periods. Fabiyi also mentioned plans to expand into other sports and acquire a permanent facility.
Former President Rex Abitogun commended members for sustaining the club and noted that the Founders' Day celebration provided an opportunity to honour the club's pioneers. He reflected on the challenges the club had overcome and expressed hope for its continued growth. The Immediate Past President, Akpugo Ugochukwu Kennedy, highlighted the passion still displayed by members in their 50s and 60s.
Director of Sports, Ambrose Okosun, and Prince Leonard Pius Ocheuje, among others, also acknowledged the club's growth beyond its original focus on physical fitness. They noted that Capital Sportiff had become a platform for friendship, networking, and mutual support. The club's 22nd anniversary celebration showcased its commitment to community, sports, and friendship.
