The Canadian government has implemented a new points system for Express Entry candidates, effective November 3, 2026. The changes, announced by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), aim to prioritize candidates with job offers in high-paying professions. The new system awards up to 100 additional points for job offers in certain fields. This update affects candidates in three federal programs: the Federal Skilled Worker Program, the Federal Skilled Trades Program, and the Canadian Experience Class.

The Express Entry system uses a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) with a maximum of 1,200 points. Previously, job offers were not considered in the points system, as the government sought to prevent fraud and the sale of job offers. However, the new system recognizes the value of job offers in certain professions. To be eligible, job offers must meet specific salary thresholds, which are based on the median salary for the profession in Canada. The points awarded vary depending on the salary level, with 100 points for professions with a median salary at least twice the Canadian median.

The new points system has three levels of points for job offers. Professions with a median salary at least twice the Canadian median receive 100 points. Those with a median salary 1.5 times the Canadian median receive 70 points, while those with a median salary 1.3 times the Canadian median receive 50 points. The points are based on the median salary for the profession, not the candidate's personal salary. Additionally, candidates with Canadian work experience in eligible high-paying professions can receive extra points, ranging from 20 to 70 points, depending on the salary level.

Candidates who have already worked in Canada may be eligible for additional points. To qualify, they must have at least 12 months of experience in an eligible high-paying profession. However, points for Canadian experience and job offers cannot be combined. The Impact on the Labour Market Assessment (EIMT) is no longer required for job offers, but authorities will still verify the legitimacy of the employer, the credibility of the job, and the candidate's qualifications.

The new points system applies to all Express Entry profiles, including those already registered. IRCC will automatically recalculate the points for existing profiles, which may take up to two weeks. During this period, IRCC suspended invitation rounds to allow for the updates. The changes aim to prioritize candidates with job offers in high-paying professions, while ensuring the integrity of the Express Entry system.

The Canadian government regularly updates the Express Entry system to ensure it meets the country's economic needs. The new points system is designed to attract skilled workers who can contribute to Canada's economy. By prioritizing job offers in high-paying professions, the government aims to address labor shortages and support economic growth. The Express Entry system remains a key pathway for skilled workers to obtain permanent residence in Canada.

The updates to the Express Entry system are part of Canada's efforts to manage its immigration program effectively. IRCC continues to monitor the system and make adjustments as needed. The new points system is expected to benefit candidates with job offers in high-paying professions, while ensuring the integrity of the immigration process. Candidates can check the IRCC website for more information on the updated points system and eligibility requirements.
