The Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, Niger State chapter, Most Rev. Dr. Bulus Dauwa Yohanna, has called on President Bola Tinubu to urgently address the economic challenges facing Nigeria. Yohanna, also the Catholic Bishop of Kontagora Diocese, made the appeal at an interdenominational prayer organised by CAN in Minna to mark Nigeria's 66th Independence Anniversary. He emphasized the need for the federal government to ensure that its economic reforms translate into tangible relief for ordinary Nigerians.

Yohanna specifically requested that the President take steps to reduce fuel and food prices, which have been contributing to the rising cost of living in the country. He also urged the government to strengthen the naira and ensure the security of lives and property, particularly in areas affected by insecurity. According to Yohanna, Nigerians are struggling with the current economic situation, and it is essential for the government to provide relief.

The CAN chairman expressed optimism that with purposeful leadership and collective action, Nigeria can overcome its current challenges. He noted that the country has endured difficult periods since independence and will continue to rise again. Yohanna challenged government at all levels to ensure that policies and reforms produce visible improvements in the lives of citizens, including employment opportunities, infrastructure, and lower living costs.

Yohanna also cautioned against turning Christian gatherings into platforms for political campaigning, urging churches and Christian leaders to remain non-partisan. He emphasized the importance of promoting peace and encouraging responsible participation in the electoral process. The CAN chairman expressed hope for a Nigeria where citizens have opportunities to fulfil their aspirations and where the country's diversity becomes a source of strength rather than division.

During the event, Yohanna congratulated Governor Umaru Bago and the people of Niger State on the 66th Independence Anniversary. He urged the governor to remain focused on protecting lives and livelihoods and delivering the objectives of the New Niger Agenda. Representing the governor at the event, Jonathan Wasa urged Nigerlites to continue praying for Nigeria, Niger State, and leaders at all levels.

Wasa expressed gratitude for the unity in diversity that has sustained Nigeria despite its challenges and optimism for a better and more prosperous Niger State and Nigeria. Yohanna and Wasa both emphasized the need for collective action and prayers to overcome the country's challenges. The event was attended by various stakeholders, including government officials, religious leaders, and citizens.

The CAN chairman concluded by expressing his vision for a new Nigeria where citizens can thrive. He encouraged Nigerians to remain hopeful and work towards a brighter future. With the country's 66th Independence Anniversary celebrations, Yohanna's message serves as a reminder of the need for effective leadership and collective action to address Nigeria's economic and social challenges.
