Cameroonian authorities have apprehended Ekedi Samuel Kenechukwu, a 43-year-old Nigerian national and promoter of "Mercy Of God Ministry", a revival church. He was arrested in Yaoundé on October 6, after a month-long manhunt. Kenechukwu, also known as "Major Prophet Eric Samuel", is suspected of involvement in human trafficking, kidnapping, and sequestration. His arrest marks a significant development in a case that has been unfolding since September 3.
The suspect was tracked down to a location in Carrefour Mballa, Yaoundé V, where he was found hiding in a room, wearing a hood to conceal his identity. He was accompanied by four others, who are believed to be his protectors and accomplices. The group was taken into custody by gendarmes, who had been investigating the case. Kenechukwu's ministry has been linked to several sites in Yaoundé where women and children were allegedly being held against their will.
The case came to light on September 3, when police discovered a site in Essos, Yaoundé, where women and children were being held. Further investigations led to the discovery of two more sites in Ngousso and Nkoabang. At Ngousso, 20 faithful were found in a house with obstructed windows, while at Nkoabang, authorities found what is believed to be the main headquarters of the ministry.
Kenechukwu's modus operandi involved moving at night and using multiple phones and SIM cards to evade detection. During the arrest, authorities seized 15 phones, several SIM cards, two motorcycles, and a Toyota RAV4 and Highlander. The suspect and his accomplices are currently in custody and will be brought before the prosecutor.
The investigation has revealed that Kenechukwu's ministry had been operating in secret, with the suspect using various tactics to keep his activities hidden. The case has raised concerns about human trafficking and exploitation in Cameroon. Authorities have promised to take a tough stance on such crimes.
The four individuals arrested alongside Kenechukwu have been identified as Gaston N., 31, Yvan F., 33, Divine F., 42, and Julius K., 46. They are also being held in custody and will face charges related to their alleged involvement in the crimes.
The suspects will be brought before the prosecutor of the Republic at the Mfoundi High Court. If convicted, they could face severe penalties for their alleged roles in the human trafficking and kidnapping case. The case is ongoing, and further details are expected to emerge as the investigation continues.
