The Cameroonian government is set to launch automatic road tolls on seven sites after finalizing preparations, according to Minister of Public Works, Emmanuel Nganou Djoumessi. The project, which began in November 2022, aims to improve revenue collection and road maintenance. The minister chaired the 14th session of the Committee to monitor the public-private partnership contract for the construction, implementation, and operation of 14 automatic toll posts.
The meeting, which lasted less than an hour, was attended by Finance Minister Louis Paul Motaze and focused on the progress of the project. Despite initial plans to complete the project by September 2023, the construction was delayed due to several constraints, including the need for suitable commercial spaces, securing project sites, and installing automatic or manual toll collection systems.
The government has been working to address these constraints, with the Ministry of Finance focusing on the financial equilibrium of the public-private partnership and ensuring accountability in the management of public funds. According to the ministry, all issues related to accountability have been resolved, and the IT system set up between the partner, Ministry of Finance, and the Central African Economic and Monetary Community (BEAC) is functioning effectively.
However, some aspects of the financial equilibrium of the public-private partnership still need to be finalized. The government is working to resolve these issues, which include setting up a website for managing subscribers and mobile phone payments. Once completed, the automatic toll system is expected to improve revenue collection and road maintenance in Cameroon.
The project involves the construction of 14 automatic toll posts on certain paved roads, with seven sites already under construction. The government aims to complete the project and start operations soon. The automatic toll system will enable the government to collect revenue more efficiently and effectively.
