The government of Cameroon, in partnership with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the National Civil Status Office (BUNEC), is set to issue 41,000 birth certificates to refugee and vulnerable children in the East, Adamawa, and North regions. This initiative aims to provide legal protection and access to essential rights such as education and healthcare. Many children in these regions lack birth certificates due to late declarations, lack of information, and limited access to civil status services.

A consultation workshop was held on September 30 in Bertoua to prepare for the operation. The workshop was attended by local authorities, including Nkwenti Simon Doh, Prefect of the Lom-et-Djerem department. The goal of the workshop was to concertedly prepare for the implementation of the operation. The lack of birth certificates exposes these children to the risk of statelessness and hinders the search for durable solutions.

The UNHCR, BUNEC, and local authorities are working together to address the issue of unregistered births. Birth registration is a crucial step in ensuring a child's access to fundamental rights. The operation will help to strengthen the legal protection of these children and provide them with essential documents.

The East, Adamawa, and North regions have been identified as areas of high need for birth certificate issuance. Many children in these regions have been displaced due to conflict or are living in host communities. The lack of birth certificates has significant consequences, including limited access to education and healthcare.

The operation to issue 41,000 birth certificates is a significant step towards addressing the protection needs of refugee and vulnerable children in Cameroon. The initiative is a collaborative effort between the government, UNHCR, and BUNEC to ensure that these children have access to essential rights and services.

The issuance of birth certificates will have a positive impact on the lives of these children, enabling them to access education, healthcare, and other essential services. The operation is also expected to contribute to the prevention of statelessness and promote durable solutions for these children.

The government of Cameroon has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the rights of refugee and vulnerable children. The issuance of birth certificates is a critical step in ensuring that these children have a secure and protected future.
