The Cameroonian government has taken a significant step towards modernizing its road infrastructure by signing a contract with the French company, Groupe Fayat, for the automation of 14 toll booths. The signing ceremony, which took place on May 18, 2020, was conducted via video conference between Yaoundé and Paris. The contract was signed by Emmanuel Nganou Djoumessi, Minister of Public Works, and Laurent Fayat, President and CEO of Groupe Fayat.

The 14 automated toll booths will be constructed on four major axes, including the Yaoundé-Douala-Limbé, Yaoundé-Bafoussam-Bamenda, Douala-Bafoussam, and the entrance to Yaoundé-Nsimalen airport. The selected toll booths are considered the most profitable out of the 45 in the country. The project will involve the construction of modern toll booths, including a communication system, a 50m-wide toll platform, and 14 buildings for operations and maintenance.

The project, which is expected to generate 300 jobs during its execution, will require an investment of 28.94 billion FCFA. Once completed, the automated toll booths will provide a range of services, including automatic vehicle classification and a reporting system. The project is part of a public-private partnership between the Cameroonian government and Groupe Fayat, which was awarded the contract in 2019.

The automation of the toll booths is expected to improve the efficiency and transparency of toll collection, reducing congestion and wait times for road users. The project will also provide opportunities for local businesses and communities, with 42,000 square meters of parking and commercial spaces planned.
