The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced that it will return to holding the Africa Cup of Nations every two years. This decision was made by the CAF Executive Committee, led by President Patrice Motsepe, after reevaluating the previous decision to hold the tournament every four years. The change in schedule was made to protect the interests of African football and its stakeholders.

The decision to reverse the schedule was made during a strategic conference held in Cape Verde from October 7-9. At the conference, Motsepe announced that the committee would reconsider the tournament's schedule. The change is also due to the fact that the proposed African Nations League, which was supposed to replace the Africa Cup of Nations and be held biennially, requires several years to secure the necessary financial resources.

According to Motsepe, the new decision aims to safeguard the interests of African football, its 54 member associations, and African professional players. He emphasized the importance of maintaining the tournament's status as the biggest African football event. The Africa Cup of Nations is not only a sporting competition but also a celebration of African cultures and traditions.

The next edition of the Africa Cup of Nations is scheduled to take place in 2027 in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. Subsequent editions will be held in 2028, 2031, and 2033, with the exception of 2030, which will be the year of the FIFA World Cup. The tournament's schedule has been adjusted to ensure its continued relevance and competitiveness.

Motsepe highlighted the significance of the Africa Cup of Nations, stating that it brings together African nations and diaspora communities. The tournament is a platform for African footballers to showcase their talents and for fans to celebrate their cultural heritage.

The CAF President also emphasized the importance of developing African football and ensuring its sustainability. The organization is working to improve the sport's infrastructure, competitions, and resources. The Africa Cup of Nations is a key event in this effort, providing a platform for African teams to compete and develop.

The reversal of the decision on the Africa Cup of Nations frequency is seen as a positive move for African football. The tournament's biennial schedule will continue to provide a major platform for African teams to compete and showcase their talents. The event's continued relevance and popularity are expected to contribute to the growth and development of football in Africa.
