The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has appointed Nigerian football administrator Samson Adamu as its General Secretary. This appointment makes Adamu the first Nigerian to occupy the position. CAF announced the appointment on Sunday, following a recruitment process conducted by the continental football governing body. Adamu had been serving as acting General Secretary since March, after the resignation of Veron Mosengo-Omba.
Adamu's appointment was made after a competitive recruitment exercise, during which the position was widely advertised and several candidates were interviewed. CAF President Patrice Motsepe described Adamu as an experienced football administrator who joined CAF in 2018 as Director of Competitions. He later became Director of Tournaments and Events, playing a leading role in organising several major continental competitions, including the Africa Cup of Nations.
With over eight years of experience at CAF, Adamu has extensive knowledge of African football administration. He has a strong educational background, having graduated from the FIFA Master programme in International Management, Law and Humanities of Sport. This programme has equipped him with the necessary skills to oversee CAF's day-to-day administration and support the implementation of the organisation's strategic priorities.
As General Secretary, Adamu will be responsible for overseeing CAF's daily operations. He is expected to work closely with CAF President Patrice Motsepe and other members of the organisation to achieve its goals. Adamu's appointment has been well-received by the football community, with many congratulating him on his new role.
Adamu is the son of Amos Adamu, a former Director of Sports in the then Ministry of Sports and a former member of the FIFA Executive Committee. His appointment places him among a line of CAF General Secretaries that includes members of Egypt's Fahmy family. Mourad Fahmy held the position from 1961 to 1982, followed by his son, Mustapha Fahmy, who served from 1982 to 2010.
Amr Fahmy, Mourad's grandson, occupied the office from 2017 to 2019. Adamu's appointment marks a new era for CAF, with many expecting him to bring fresh ideas and perspectives to the organisation. His experience in organising major continental competitions will be invaluable in his new role.
Adamu's appointment as General Secretary is a significant milestone for Nigerian football. He will be expected to work tirelessly to promote African football and achieve CAF's goals. With his experience and education, Adamu is well-equipped to make a positive impact at CAF.
