The Cabo Verde government has unveiled a plan to support low-income families in purchasing electric vehicles, with a maximum subsidy of 80%. According to Maria da Graça Carvalho, the minister, the program aims to distribute around 20,000 electric vehicles to eligible households. This initiative was announced during a parliamentary debate on the 2027 State Budget proposal.

The program is part of a broader effort to promote sustainable mobility and reduce emissions in the country. In June, the government launched a contest worth 10 million euros to support the purchase of electric vehicles, which quickly ran out of funds. The new program will have a dedicated budget, although the exact amount has not been specified.

In addition to supporting low-income families, the government will also maintain incentives for the general public to purchase electric vehicles. These incentives will have similar rules to previous programs but with a budget of 50 million euros. The goal is to encourage the substitution of combustion engine vehicles with zero-emission vehicles.

The government has also announced plans to support the renovation of buildings, electrification of consumption, and renewable energy. The initiative aims to cover over 50,000 homes by 2032. Furthermore, the government will support the purchase of up to 9,000 electric vehicles for micro-enterprises.

Another initiative announced by the minister is the support for the acquisition of more sustainable heavy vehicles and the expansion of the charging station network. The government will also co-finance the purchase of 700 electric buses for low-density areas, which will be used for worker and student mobility.

The government has also announced a new 100 million euro program to decarbonize sectors with high natural gas consumption, such as ceramics and glass. Additionally, a new cycle of dam concessions will be launched, allowing part of the future revenues to be used for environmental recovery and ecosystem restoration.

The minister concluded by highlighting the government's commitment to sustainability and environmental protection. The various initiatives announced will contribute to reducing emissions and promoting a more sustainable future for Cabo Verde. The programs will be implemented through various government agencies, including the Environmental Fund.
