As of September 22, 2026, Côte d'Ivoire's transport authorities have registered a total of 222,578 vehicles under the new initial vehicle registration system. This was announced by Oumar Sacko, Director General of Land Transport and Circulation, at an event organized by the Government Information and Communication Center in Abidjan. The new system aims to modernize and secure vehicle registration procedures.
The registered vehicles comprise 86,739 new vehicles, 42,706 used vehicles, and 93,133 two- and three-wheeled vehicles. According to Sacko, the deployment of the new system is part of a broader reform to modernize and digitalize registration procedures while enhancing security and combating document and license plate fraud.
To facilitate the registration process, an accelerated procedure for new vehicles has been introduced, reducing the time required to obtain administrative documents. This has enabled the registration of over 21,619 vehicles, with 20,509 immatriculations generated and 13,582 license plates already issued. An arrêté was issued on August 18, 2025, allowing authorized concessionaires to perform several formalities in advance.
The new system has also led to the regularization and registration of 40,253 two- and three-wheeled vehicles in Abidjan since September 22, 2022. Furthermore, a special operation has been underway since January 2026 to regularize private vehicles belonging to defense and security forces with non-compliant license plates.
The operation has resulted in the registration of 18,706 vehicles, with 10,856 successfully immatriculated. Designated sites have been set up for this purpose, including the Agban camp, the new Akouédo camp, and the Yopougon Anti-Riot Brigade. According to Sacko, vehicle registration is an essential administrative act that officially identifies a vehicle and its owner.
The registration process also facilitates knowledge of the vehicle fleet, road safety, and the fight against irregular or falsified vehicle circulation. The issue of regulating two- and three-wheeled vehicles has been a significant topic of discussion during the event. The government aims to improve road safety and reduce the number of vehicles in irregular situations.
