The department of Kouto in Côte d'Ivoire has reported no maternal deaths during the third quarter of 2026. According to Dr. Koné Sékou, the director of the department of health, hygiene, and universal health coverage, this achievement was announced during a meeting of the departmental committee on maternal and neonatal death surveillance and response. The committee's report covered the period from July to September 2026.

The report presented by Dr. Koné Sékou revealed that out of 1,924 expected births, 1,187 assisted deliveries and 106 home deliveries were recorded, totaling 1,274 live births. The data also highlighted the role of the regional public hospital in Boundiali in handling obstetric emergencies as part of the referral system. These efforts aim to improve maternal and neonatal health outcomes in the region.

The committee's meeting called on health actors and populations to maintain vigilance in monitoring and preventing maternal and neonatal deaths. The need for sustained efforts to address identified challenges was emphasized, including previous issues with medical evacuations, supply of delivery kits, and insufficient technical equipment. These challenges were identified during the committee's previous meeting on June 30.

The prefect of Kouto, Gnamou Angoran Pierre, presided over the meeting and stressed the importance of strengthening community surveillance and population awareness. This, he noted, would facilitate better care for pregnant women and newborns. The prefect's remarks underscored the critical role of community involvement in improving health outcomes.

Dr. Koné Sékou's presentation highlighted the progress made in the department's health sector. The data collected during the third quarter demonstrates a positive trend in reducing maternal and neonatal mortality. However, the committee acknowledged that sustained efforts are necessary to maintain this progress and address ongoing challenges.

The departmental committee's meeting is part of a regular review process aimed at monitoring and addressing maternal and neonatal health issues. By regularly assessing the situation and identifying areas for improvement, the committee seeks to ensure that pregnant women and newborns receive adequate care. This approach is crucial in reducing mortality rates and improving overall health outcomes.

The achievement of zero maternal deaths in Kouto during Q3 2026 is a significant milestone. It reflects the collaborative efforts of health authorities, healthcare providers, and the community. Continued vigilance and cooperation will be essential in maintaining this progress and further improving maternal and neonatal health in the region.
