The Côte d'Ivoire government has partnered with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to launch a pilot project aimed at improving the efficiency of traffic and public transport in Abidjan. The project, which is expected to last 36 months, from March 2026 to February 2029, will focus on creating a sustainable and integrated transport system in the city. This initiative is a significant step towards addressing the challenges of traffic congestion and improving the overall transportation experience for residents.

The project includes the deployment of 100 vehicles equipped with GPS and electronic payment modules. This move is part of a broader strategy to modernize the public transport system and make it more efficient. The use of GPS technology will enable real-time tracking of vehicles, while the electronic payment modules will provide passengers with a convenient and cashless payment option. This development is expected to enhance the overall passenger experience and encourage the use of public transport.

In addition to the vehicle deployment, the project also includes two other pilot initiatives. One of these initiatives focuses on monitoring traffic conditions using cameras, while the other involves the installation of intelligent traffic lights. These measures are designed to improve traffic management and reduce congestion in Abidjan. By leveraging technology, the project aims to create a more intelligent and responsive transport system that can adapt to the changing needs of the city.

The project's second Consultative Coordination Committee (CCC) meeting was held on November 4, 2026, to review the progress of the initiative. The meeting provided a platform for stakeholders to discuss the project's achievements and challenges, and to chart a way forward. The project is being implemented by the Agence Municipale de Gestion Urbaine d'Abidjan (AMUGA) in collaboration with JICA.

The project's focus on job training is an essential aspect of its implementation. By providing training to personnel involved in the management of traffic and public transport, the project aims to build local capacity and ensure the sustainability of the initiative. This approach will enable the Côte d'Ivoire government to take full ownership of the project and ensure its continued success beyond the project's lifespan.

The launch of this project is a significant development in Côte d'Ivoire's efforts to improve its transportation infrastructure. With Abidjan being one of the country's major economic hubs, the project is expected to have a positive impact on the city's economy and quality of life. By improving the efficiency of traffic and public transport, the project will enhance the overall competitiveness of the city and make it a more attractive destination for businesses and investors.

The project's success will be closely monitored, and its outcomes will inform future initiatives aimed at improving transportation in Côte d'Ivoire. With the support of JICA, the Côte d'Ivoire government is confident that the project will achieve its objectives and serve as a model for sustainable and integrated transport systems in other cities across the country.
