The Ivoirian Prime Minister, Dr. Beugré Mambé, officially opened the 2nd edition of the International Conference on Sustainable Mobility and Climate Change (CIMDC 2026) in Abidjan on October 19, 2026. The conference, organized by the Ministry of Transport and Maritime Affairs, aims to address the challenges of urban mobility in Africa. The event brings together public, private, scientific, and civil society actors committed to sustainable urban mobility and climate change adaptation in Africa and beyond.

The conference is an extension of the Sustainable Mobility and Climate Week held in Dakar in 2022. Dr. Beugré Mambé emphasized the need to balance transportation capacity, accessibility, and environmental respect. He highlighted the importance of developing collective transportation systems, such as metro, BRT, lagoon transportation, and cable cars, as well as the use of clean energy and concessionary financing to achieve these solutions.

The Minister of Transport and Maritime Affairs, Amadou Koné, noted that mobility is crucial for the development of societies, enabling access to employment, education, healthcare, and essential services. He stressed that mobility is also a factor of economic competitiveness, social cohesion, and balanced territorial development. However, it has become a major challenge in terms of energy transition, greenhouse gas reduction, air quality, and climate change resilience.

Amadou Koné outlined four key areas of focus for sustainable mobility in Côte d'Ivoire. The first concerns the development of public transportation, including buses and mini-buses. The second involves improving road infrastructure and promoting non-motorized transportation. The third focuses on developing lagoon transportation and better organizing the flow of people and goods. The fourth area emphasizes the role of digital technology and data in improving transportation services.

The Minister of Transport and Maritime Affairs emphasized that investing in sustainable mobility is essential for development, employment, and competitiveness. He stated that Côte d'Ivoire has chosen to act and adopt an integrated, sustainable, and efficient mobility approach. The conference will culminate in the adoption of the Abidjan Declaration, which aims to amplify the voice of African cities and actors in international discussions on sustainable mobility and climate action.

The CIMDC 2026 conference brings together various stakeholders, including policymakers, private sector representatives, scientists, and civil society members. The event aims to promote sustainable urban mobility and climate change adaptation in Africa. The Abidjan Declaration is expected to contribute to the COP31 discussions, emphasizing the importance of sustainable mobility and climate action in Africa.

The conference outcomes are expected to have a significant impact on sustainable mobility development in Côte d'Ivoire and Africa. The Ivoirian government's commitment to sustainable mobility is reflected in its efforts to develop collective transportation systems and promote clean energy.
