The Forces armées de Côte d'Ivoire (FACI) has introduced a new specialized unit, the Bataillon d'infanterie de montagne (BIM), aimed at strengthening its engagement capabilities in challenging terrains. The BIM was formed through the transformation of the Bataillon de sécurisation de l'Ouest (BSO), which was established in 2014 to combat transborder threats, organized crime networks, and agricultural product trafficking. The BSO was dissolved and reconstituted as the BIM, with Lieutenant-Colonel Siaka Dimy Sydney Martial appointed as its first commander. The ceremony included the presentation of the new unit's insignia and the swearing-in of its soldiers.
The BIM's establishment is part of the FACI's efforts to adapt its operational capabilities to various environments, initiated in 2024.
