During a press conference held at the Lycée français Blaise Pascal in Abidjan on September 23, 2026, Ouattara Yegueleworo, head of the "Le droit à la langue des signes à toutes les étapes de la vie" (DDL) project, urged journalists to refrain from using the term "sourd-muet" (deaf-mute). Instead, he encouraged them to use the phrase "personne sourde" (deaf person), which is considered more accurate and respectful.
According to Ouattara Yegueleworo, using appropriate terminology is essential for respecting the dignity and rights of deaf individuals. He emphasized that a deaf person's vocal cords function normally, and therefore, they are not mute.
