The government of Côte d'Ivoire has announced plans to allocate 4 billion FCFA in 2027 to strengthen mental health care in the country. This move aims to address the growing challenges related to mental health. The announcement was made by Health Minister Pierre N'Gou Dimba at the opening of a two-day multisectoral dialogue on mental health.

The dialogue, organized by the National Mental Health Program (PNSM), brings together institutional actors and representatives of the diplomatic corps. The goal is to assess national challenges and define adapted responses in preparation for the 7th World Ministerial Summit on Mental Health in Kigali in 2027. Minister N'Gou Dimba emphasized that addressing mental health issues requires a broader approach beyond the health sector.

Professor Assémian Médard Koua, director coordinator of PNSM, presented the priorities of the national roadmap for 2026-2030. These priorities include prevention, integration of mental health services into primary health care, and the involvement of young people. Koua highlighted the essential role of young people in constructing sustainable responses to mental health challenges.

According to data presented by UNICEF representative Jean-François Basse, 30.54% of suicide attempts recorded between 2019 and 2021 involved individuals aged 10 to 24. Basse called for action to ensure that adolescents and young people in need of help can access support, trained professionals, and effective services.

The European Union representative also emphasized the importance of psychosocial support, particularly for returning migrants. In 2026, nearly 800 psychological evaluations were conducted, with 20% revealing complex situations requiring close follow-up. The representative stressed that sustainable reintegration cannot be limited to economic and social support alone.

The dialogue also featured a plea from young people, the presentation of certificates to psychologists, and the launch of the national digital mental health platform, TILA. Several panels discussed access to essential care and medication, as well as psychosocial support in humanitarian or health emergency situations.

The challenge now is to make mental health care, including listening services and professionals, accessible to all. Minister N'Gou Dimba's initiative aims to provide timely support to those in need, ultimately protecting lives. The allocation of 4 billion FCFA in 2027 marks a significant step towards improving mental health care in Côte d'Ivoire.
