The government of Burkina Faso officially inaugurated the Niangdo Dam and its associated infrastructure on October 27, 2026. Located in the commune of Poa, the dam was constructed through a partnership between Burkina Faso, India, and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The project, valued at over 1.6 billion FCFA, aims to enhance access to water and strengthen agricultural production in the region.
The Niangdo Dam has a storage capacity of approximately 580,000 cubic meters of water and will benefit over 50,000 people across ten villages in the Poa commune. The infrastructure includes a six-hectare irrigated perimeter, equipped with 12 wells, solar-powered pumping systems, and 24 irrigation points. These facilities will support dry-season production and help diversify crops, increasing farmers' revenue, particularly among women and young people.
The project also includes the development of additional infrastructure, such as an elementary school with an improved water supply system, solar-powered lighting, fish ponds, a school kitchen, and latrine blocks. During the 2025-2026 agricultural campaign, local farmers produced around 11 tons of rice and 50 tons of onions, demonstrating the project's potential to boost agricultural output.
The UNDP's Resident Representative in Burkina Faso, Snehal Vasantlal Soneji, emphasized the significance of the dam as a tangible example of dynamic partnership among stakeholders. He highlighted the importance of water management in the face of climate change, stating that investing in water management is crucial for resilience, food security, and territorial development.
Indian Ambassador to Burkina Faso, Om Prakash Meena, expressed satisfaction with the project's completion and hoped that the dam would significantly improve the living conditions of the beneficiary populations. He stressed the need for regular maintenance to ensure the dam's durability and encouraged all stakeholders to work together to preserve the infrastructure for future generations.
The Burkinabè government's representative, Minister Amadou Dicko, invited the beneficiary populations to prioritize the dam's maintenance to prevent siltation. He also recalled the government's efforts to facilitate access to water, including a subsidized drilling operation that will benefit 950 people and the goal of developing 50,000 hectares of land by October 2027 as part of the agro-pastoral offensive.
The Niangdo Dam project demonstrates a successful example of South-South cooperation, with the UNDP pledging to continue its support to make the dam an integrated local development hub, combining irrigated agriculture, economic opportunities, women's and youth empowerment, and ecosystem restoration.
