The commune of Korsimoro in Burkina Faso has marked a significant milestone in improving access to clean water with the inauguration of a modern water supply system. The system, developed under the Water Supply and Sanitation Program (PAEA), aims to provide a sustainable solution to the growing water needs of the community. The infrastructure was inspected by State Minister for Agriculture, Water, Animal and Fisheries Resources, Commander Ismaël SOMBIÉ, on September 21, 2026.
The water supply system is powered by two wells, each with a capacity of 15 cubic meters per hour, totaling 30 cubic meters per hour. The wells are interconnected and supply a completed and operational water tower. The system also features a 32-kilometer distribution network, extending clean water services to multiple sectors of the commune. To increase accessibility, 400 private connections have been made available free of charge.
The project also involves the rehabilitation of 18 existing public fountains and the construction of 15 new ones. The system is designed to meet the needs of approximately 15,000 inhabitants, surpassing the current demand of around 5,000 residents. This excess capacity will enable the commune to accommodate future population growth, with projections indicating that the system will meet demands until 2030.
A notable feature of the system is its energy autonomy, achieved through a solar field paired with lithium batteries. This setup allows for energy storage during peak sunlight hours, ensuring continuity of service during periods of low solar production, with up to 15 hours of autonomy. The project has been designed with long-term sustainability in mind, including the drilling of four additional wells as reserves.
The wells have been prepared for connection to the network, allowing for their gradual activation in response to growing demand without requiring significant modifications to the existing system. Following the inspection, State Minister Ismaël SOMBIÉ praised the project, emphasizing that access to clean water is a fundamental right, not a luxury. He stressed the need for continued investment to ensure regular, sustainable, and equitable access to this essential resource.
The new water supply system in Korsimoro combines increased capacity, expanded network, solar energy, and future expansion possibilities. This infrastructure aims to strengthen access to clean water and support the commune's development.
