On October 2, 2026, General Célestin Simporé, Burkina Faso's Minister of State for Defense and Patriotic Defense, engaged with citizens at the "Dialogue with the People" event, part of the third edition of the Journées nationales d'engagement patriotique et de participation citoyenne (JEPPC). He highlighted significant changes within the national armed forces since 2022, including the recruitment of Volontaires pour la défense de la patrie (VDP) and the establishment of a reserve military force.
General Simporé noted that prior to 2022, Burkina Faso's military was more of a "parade army" than a combat-ready force. In response to the country's security situation, the military has undergone substantial transformations. The VDP recruitment drive, launched in October 2022, initially aimed to enlist 35,000 communal and 15,000 national volunteers. However, the numbers have exceeded expectations, with nearly 90,000 volunteers mobilized.
The Defense Minister discussed the challenges of supporting the VDP, including their compensation, food, and healthcare. To address these needs, the Fonds de soutien patriotique was established. General Simporé also mentioned the reorganization of the military into six regions, up from three, and the creation of rapid intervention battalions in November 2022. These units have been deployed across the country to enhance security.
General Simporé emphasized the importance of collaboration between defense and security forces, VDP, and civilians in addressing the country's security challenges. He urged citizens to prioritize national development and security, highlighting that the military is not the only way to serve the country. Medical professionals, specialists, and individuals with other skills can contribute to national defense and development through their respective fields.
The minister also touched on the issue of military cooperation with other countries. He confirmed that Burkina Faso has ended its military cooperation with France and is now relying more on its own forces for defense. However, he stressed that the country remains open to cooperating with partners who respect its sovereignty.
General Simporé reported progress in reclaiming areas previously inaccessible to civilians due to security concerns. He cited examples such as Diapaga, Titao, Solhan, and Sebba, where efforts have been made to restore administration and basic social services. The minister also highlighted the acquisition of new equipment and arms, as well as enhanced aerial surveillance capabilities, to strengthen the military's operational capacity.
The Defense Minister concluded by emphasizing the need for sustained patriotism and engagement from citizens. He encouraged citizens aged 18 and above to consider joining the reserve military force, which offers an alternative way to contribute to national defense without pursuing a career in the military. A dedicated online platform has been launched for registrations, with plans for decentralization to regional and provincial levels.
