The 18th edition of the Salon international de l'artisanat de Ouagadougou (SIAO) is underway in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, showcasing the best of African craftsmanship. Among the exhibits, one piece has drawn significant attention: a massive helicopter sculpture created by Captain Yamba, a Burkinabè military officer. The sculpture, titled "La Puissance d'une Nation" (The Power of a Nation), is made from spent military casings, also known as douilles, which have been transformed into a stunning work of art.

Captain Yamba, also known as "Patte de Jaguar" or "Le Fou Sage," is not a trained artist but a passionate individual who has developed his skills over time. His inspiration for the sculpture came from his experiences on the battlefield and his desire to give a second life to objects that would otherwise be discarded. The helicopter sculpture is adorned with a PKMS machine gun, a Soviet-designed weapon, which adds to its imposing presence. The artwork is displayed in front of the Thomas Sankara Creativity Pavilion, attracting visitors from all walks of life.

The sculpture represents more than just a creative piece; it conveys a message to African youth about the importance of audacity and creativity. According to Captain Yamba, "I represented the work in a helicopter to encourage African youth to achieve and create. If we don't create, we'll always be at the bottom." The artwork is not part of the competition but has become one of the main attractions at SIAO 2026.

Captain Yamba's creative process is driven by inspiration, and he often finds himself working for hours without realizing the passage of time. He began his artistic journey by purchasing a welding machine and experimenting with his ideas. His first artwork was presented at a government exhibition, and since then, he has continued to hone his skills. When asked about the number of military casings used in the sculpture, Captain Yamba admitted that he didn't keep track, emphasizing that the creative process is driven by inspiration rather than precise calculations.

The captain's passion for art is not limited to his creative expression; it also serves as a way to cope with the challenges of his military profession. He believes that art helps him liberate himself from difficult memories and experiences. For Captain Yamba, creating is a way to find balance and solace in his life. His dedication to his craft is evident in the intricate details of his sculpture, which has become a symbol of Burkinabè creativity and ingenuity.

The SIAO 2026 event will run until November 8, 2026, giving visitors ample opportunity to discover Captain Yamba's artwork and appreciate the talent of Burkinabè artisans. The exhibition showcases a wide range of creative pieces, highlighting the diversity and richness of African craftsmanship. As visitors continue to flock to the event, Captain Yamba's sculpture remains a standout attraction, inspiring admiration and curiosity.

As the art world continues to evolve, Captain Yamba's unique approach to creativity serves as a reminder that art can be found in unexpected places. His transformation of spent military casings into a stunning work of art demonstrates the power of imagination and innovation. With his sculpture, Captain Yamba has proven that with passion and dedication, even the most ordinary objects can be turned into something extraordinary.
